EXPERIENCE

I am a director, dramaturg, playwright, and mentor who has spent more than thirty years working closely with writers to develop new plays and musicals from first draft to full production. My background in directing and artistic leadership is the foundation of my script consulting work today: I understand how words on the page transform into living, breathing theatre—and what a script needs in order to truly connect with an audience.

For twenty-five years I served as the Executive Artistic Director of TACT/The Actors Company Theatre, an award-winning Off-Broadway company in New York City. During that time, I unearthed, developed, and produced more than two hundred plays, collaborating with playwrights, actors, designers, and artistic teams across a wide range of styles and traditions. Working on everything from new scripts to rarely seen classics taught me how to evaluate structure with precision, shape narrative arcs with clarity, and guide writers as they refine story, tone, dialogue, and character.

My directing work Off-Broadway has included plays by Arthur Miller, T. S. Eliot, A. R. Gurney, Noël Coward, Edward Bond, Motti Lerner, Christopher Durang, and many others. Whether it was a world premiere, a rediscovered classic, or the first revival of a contemporary piece, my focus was always the same: to understand the heart of the script and help bring that intention fully alive onstage.

Championing new writing has always been central to my work. I founded and led newTACTics, a developmental initiative that supported both emerging and established playwrights through workshops, dramaturgical guidance, and an annual New Play Festival. Many of the works developed there have since gone on to full productions around the country.

As a playwright and adaptor, I have approached the craft from the inside out. I co-wrote and directed The Triangle Factory Project and Three Wise Guys, both of which premiered Off-Broadway and continue to receive productions nationwide. I also developed and directed an adaptation of She Stoops to Conquer, produced Off-Broadway in 2017.

My work in musical theatre includes book and lyric writing as an advanced member of the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop (Goose! Beyond the Nursery, Charlotte & Shaw), as well as serving as Artistic Director of the American Musicals Project at the New-York Historical Society, producing and directing an annual concert series that celebrated major musical theatre writers and featured Broadway performers and theatrical legends.

My life in the theatre began as a very young actor, working on Broadway, Off-Broadway, regionally, and in theatres around the world, as well as in film, television, industrials, and many commercials. That early experience onstage - and in front of the camera - continues to inform how I read scripts, understand performance, and collaborate with artists. Over the years, I’ve also taught workshops and classes across the United States and Canada in acting, text analysis, improvisation, and performance. I am a member of SDC and the Dramatists Guild.

All of this experience - directing premieres and revivals, developing new work, writing and adapting plays, performing, producing, teaching, and leading a company - has given me a broad and nuanced understanding of how stories function, how scripts grow, and how writers can strengthen their work.
